Raiders roll past Pleasant Valley

Sometimes things go your way, and other times they don’t.

The Tamaqua girls basketball team suffered a stunning loss to a very good Schuylkill Haven team on Friday.

The Blue Raiders were hurting, but not for long.

Tamaqua was able to get all their players time on the court Saturday as it routed a young Pleasant Valley squad, 57-6.

Lessons can be learned for both clubs.

The Raiders found they can shake off the blues from a loss, while the Bears will try and regroup and figure out a way on how to handle adversity.

Tamaqua did things — most of the time to perfection — to successfully rebound from its first loss.

The winners were led by a young rising sophomore star — Lauren Ligenza — who socked away 20 points, and was a force off the glass with a dozen rebounds. Her teammate Millie Black also found her groove with 11 points.

There were hardly any miscues for the Raiders, as they clearly had their way in taking a 30-0 lead after a quarter, and remained in cruise mode by the time halftime rolled around with a 48-0 advantage.

“In a game like this, we try and work on some things that we need to get better at,” Tamaqua head coach Erika Davis said. “We had the luxury of playing a number of players, and we coached them up so they know what to expect when they do get an opportunity to play (in a varsity game).”

At times, Tamaqua was just too strong, as its quickness and ability to run the floor was a focal point for sure. And it had few contested shots — shooting 24-of-38 during the opening 16 minutes.

In the first four minutes, the Raiders raced to a 17-0 edge, getting baskets from both Ligenza and Black, with the former six-foot swing player hitting the nets for 10 of her points.

The beat never was missed over the final three-plus minutes of the first quarter, as Kendle Miller served up a bucket off a rebound, reserve Veronica Scott dumped in her first basket before Ligenza, and Kolbe Robb also hit before Millie Black flung in a buzzer-beater triple in the 30-0 first-quarter run.

Davis said it was a game that allowed her to work on basics.

“We try and make sure that (the girls) execute their passing, making good cuts, taking good angles and to be (precise) in that part of the game.”

Tamaqua shot 8-for-13 from the floor in the second quarter with a 16-0 run that was led by Ligenza, who tallied the first four points to open the period.

Millie Black and Robb each added baskets, too. Black contributed five points in the quarter, while Ligenza also had five.

RAIDER SWEEP ... In the preliminary contest, the Tamaqua JVs registered a 46-21 win.
