Palmerton fire Chief Jason Behler discussed a new rescue engine purchase with borough council on Thursday.
Behler said the department is seeking a new vehicle to replace the department’s 2002 American LaFrance pumper.
He said cost estimates range from $1,347,340 from KME, to $1,418,897 from Pierce.
Behler said KME has indicated a delivery time of 28 months, while Pierce said 48 to 52 months.
Behler added they could wait to assure the vehicle gets here in 2028, but with price increases for both brands, they could look to order it a few months early to save roughly $178,000 and possibly have it in early 2027.
“We need to order it to make sure it’s here in time,” Behler said. “We feel more comfortable with something we have.”
It was then suggested that the borough’s public safety committee come back with a recommendation to council.
Resident Raberta Hans asked whether any grants have been pursued.
Behler said based on the input of several grant writers, they feel the borough would not be looked upon favorably to receive federal money for apparatus based on the way the borough is zoned.
