Fillies dominant in victory over Minersville

It’s only one week into the basketball season.

But the way the Marian girls have come out of the blocks — hitting on just about every cylinder — the Fillies look like they are in mid-season form.

Marian devoured a young Minersville team in one swoosh on Tuesday, rolling to a 70-32 victory.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, just think about this: The Fillies don’t have any senior starters, and have more balance up and down the lineup, even off the bench.

Marian took care of the Battlin’ Miners before the halfway point in this non-league game, spoiling the visitors season opener. In the process, it improved to 2-0.

It got marvelous performances from the “new kid on the block” — freshman Addy Marek, junior mainstay Addy Fritz — who zinged in 20 points, and Oliva Serfass, who tagged along with 13 points. And most of that scoring came in the first two quarters.

“We like to be aggressive, that’s the way we want to play,” said Fillies head coach Damian Fritz.

Shoot, Marian was up and down the court early and often speeding to a 20-4 lead after eight minutes, en route to a 41-11 halftime advantage.

Marek admitted she had nerves for her freshman debut at home.

“Yeah, I did have some nerves, but once (things) settled down I was okay,” the 6-foot swing player said. “Coach likes the fact that he wants the intensity, and the fact that we work hard on defense.”

Heck, Fort Knox may be easier to penetrate than the Fillies’ full-court pressure, as well as their half-court defense.

“It feels amazing, we have such a team chemistry,” said Addy “Juice” Fritz. “We’ve got so much energy, and we play for each other.”

No selfishness here.

The key to the Marian attack: Press, press and press some more, as Minersville found out all too well after it was forced into 17 first-half turnovers.

“It’s pretty much been our MO, since I’ve been here,” said Fritz about the pressing game. “Our energy level is very, very high ... this team is really aggressive, and that’s what we’ve been missing in the past.”

Marian rocked and socked it at the onset, gushing in front 10-0 with less than half the time ticked off the first-quarter clock. Marek went inside and completed a three-point play, feisty guard Deana Pugh then drove the baseline before Marek added her second three-point play and when Fritz flung in a corner shot, it was a hot start that just kept piling on the points.

Though the Miners turned to its best player, Jenna Cullen, who countered with four points, Marian answered right back on an Emily Carone basket, along with a jumper in the paint from Oliva Serfass. The runoff continued with Marek scoring two more field goals and Pugh’s free throws made it a 20-4 bulge after eight minutes.

Coach Fritz had high praise for his first-year player.

“(Marek) is very athletic, offensively and defensively she compliment’s Addison (Fritz) and Serfass and Pugh,” he said.

The beat just kept coming.

Leading 26-6, the Fillies continued to rip away, going on a 15-1 run to breeze to a commanding halftime 41-11 lead.

Coach Fritz said playing hard and aggressive is part of the development with this squad.

“If you want to take the next step, you’ve got to get out of your comfort zone,” he said. “This team is not afraid to make that extra pass, thread the needle pass, and they know defensively their going to put themselves in the best position (to score).”

TOUGH GO … The Miners are going through a slow rebuild, with only one starter from last season. Cullen finished with a team-high 13 points. Minersville’s Emily Mealey is in her first year as head coach.

BALANCING ACT … Pugh fired in nine points to compliment the big three, and will assuredly have her share of bright lights as the season moves forward. Ditto for Carone, Oliva Thomas and Sophia Searfoss.

BY THE NUMBERS … Marian out-rebounded the Miners 31-20; The Fillies shot 29-of-57 from the floor, and forced 23 turnovers.
