Schuylkill County seeks public input on mitigation preparation

Schuylkill County officials have announced the release of “Our Resilience Strategy: Schuylkill County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan.”

This plan is the outcome of a planning process aimed at reducing the risks and impacts of natural and human-caused hazards on Schuylkill County. The county’s Department of Planning and Zoning, Emergency Management Agency and the Conservation District engaged in a collective effort to lead the development of the plan.

The plan comprises multiple components designed to create a strategic road map for the county aimed at mitigating or eliminating potential impacts from hazards in the coming years. A comprehensive risk assessment was performed to pinpoint the hazards most likely to affect the county, as well as those with the potential to cause significant damage. The county worked in partnership with local municipalities to evaluate their existing capabilities for addressing hazard impacts.

The hazard mitigation plan outlines strategies and actions to protect community members, property, businesses, critical services and infrastructure from potential disasters such as floods, droughts and hazardous materials releases.

Developed in collaboration with local municipalities, governmental partners, the private sector, nonprofits and community stakeholders, the plan emphasizes the importance of partnerships and proactive measures to shape a thriving and resilient Schuylkill County.

Community members are invited to provide feedback. Input is vital to ensure the plan addresses the unique needs of Schuylkill County and prioritizes actions that will make the greatest difference.

The draft plan is available for review and comment until Dec. 14, and can be accessed on the plan’s website, https://bit.ly/3CV7wbP
