Luzerne shooting suspects nabbed in Lehighton

Two people are in custody after they were arrested Monday night in Lehighton for their alleged roles in a shooting over the weekend in Luzerne County.

Lehighton Borough Police Chief Troy Abelovsky posted on the department’s Facebook page Tuesday afternoon.

He said two felony arrest warrants were issued in conjunction with that investigation for Shaine Hawk, 29, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and recklessly endangering, and Robin Sterner, 23, for conspiracy to commit, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and reckless endangering.

Abelovsky said that at 11:20 p.m. Monday, Lehighton Borough Police were contacted by the Pennsylvania State Police and US Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force. Abelovsky said they provided information regarding a shooting which had occurred in Dennison Township on Saturday that had injured one person.

Abelovsky said police surrounded the four-unit building and directed them with a loudspeaker to come out.

He said the home renter emerged from the residence with a 3-year-old child. They were safely secured away from the incident.

Abelovsky said the renter confirmed that both offenders were inside the residence. Within a few minutes, two more juveniles were safely moved away from the residence and police were informed that both men had barricaded themselves in a bedroom on the second floor.

He said information provided believed both subjects were held up in the 300 block of South First Street in Lehighton and were considered armed and dangerous. There were also reports of additional occupants within the residence.

Abelovsky said Pennsylvania State Police organized a team consisting of US Marshals Task Force, four units from the Lehighton Borough Police Department, two units from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office and multiple PA State Police Units.

He said a four-man tactical team was able to gain access into the bedroom and successfully take both subjects into custody without incident. No injuries were report to any police units or subjects involved in this incident.

Abelovsky said the home renter and children returned to the residence upon conclusion of the incident.

Abelovsky said the suspects were transported to State Police Lehighton and their investigation was still ongoing.
