Event benefits deployed military personnel

It would be impossible to miss “Jack Mack,” a four-seater King Cab Mack truck painted with a red, white and blue theme and with large American flags flying on top, while it was in the parking lot of the Brodheadsville ShopRite.

It was on location recently to draw attention to Operation: Touch of Home, which helps provide food and essential items for deployed military.

“We team up to help the military, because we know how it is over there,” said Lisa Mankus, the driver of the truck. “It feels good to contribute to a good cause.”

Operation: Touch of Home was started in 2004 by Dean and Sharon Green as they prepared for their son’s deployment to Fallujah, Iraq.

Volunteers for 20 years, Donna Farmer and John Wilcox lll, began their day at 8 a.m. filling up the truck with loads to be taken to American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert. There, other volunteers packed and prepared the packages for delivery for Christmastime.

More than 150,000 pounds of items have been shipped to 1,500 soldiers.

In addition to food items, Operation: Touch of Home collects toiletries, including shampoo, lotion and razors, and appreciates items such as puzzles, coffee filters, flashlights, water guns, batteries and games for the military personnel. A full list of items can be found on the organization’s website.
