Tamaqua teens charged in assault of beer delivery man, witness

Four Tamaqua teens – three boys and a girl – are facing charges after police said they attempted to steal beer from a deliveryman at a bar in the community and then attacked the delivery man and a witness.

Two boys, ages 15 and 17, are facing a felony charge of aggravated assault and misdemeanor charges of simple assault, attempted theft and disorderly conduct.

A 16-year-old boy faces the same felony charge of aggravated assault and misdemeanor charges of simple assault, conspiracy/attempted theft and disorderly conduct.

And a 14-year-old girl is charged with two felonies, aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, and misdemeanor charges of simple assault, conspiracy to commit simple assault, conspiracy to commit attempted theft and disorderly conduct.

Police said the incident happened during the 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift last Tuesday when county radio dispatched them to the area of Mundy’s Pub at Cedar and Greenwood streets for a theft in progress. They said a delivery person from My Brother’s Beer Barn, Hometown, was making a delivery to the pub at the time.

They said the delivery man had a small hand truck that had cases of beers on it when a witness saw one of the boys attempting to grab a case of Heineken beer from the hand truck, and another boy already had a case of Budweiser in his hands while walking toward Hazle Street. The witness said he yelled to the boy to come back and return the beer and when the boy failed to do so, the witness chased him, grabbed him by the hoodie and walked him back to the pub.

Police said at that point, the two other boys and the girl attacked the delivery man and witness. The delivery man told police the juveniles tried to push the witness down the steps that lead under the bar where the alcohol is stored. As the delivery man tried to stop them, he was taken to the ground. He told police he had one of the boys under control until the girl kicked him in the head.

The witness related he saw a group of “kids” on Broad Street who were loud. He said a short time later, he saw them a second time, and saw one teen grab the case of Budweiser off the hand truck, and the other one going after the Heineken.

The witness said he chased the boy down and returned him to the area of the bar, but upon their return, he said, the “other kids got behind me and pushed me.”

Police said a woman who was in the area of a nearby car dealership provided police similar information. She said she saw the witness chasing the boy who was carrying the beer and said after he caught him and took him back to the bar, she “saw them gang up on him (the witness), rush him and started swinging (at him) while the girl kicked the delivery man while he was on the ground.”

The delivery man told police one of the juveniles punched him about 20 times until the girl kicked him in the head. The foursome eventually fled the scene, police said.
