Local Roundup: Results from Nov. 30

The Lehighton boys basketball team captured the Hamburg Tournament championship with a convincing win Saturday in the title game.

Panther Valley also gained its second straight win of the season by defeating Weatherly, while the Marian girls were successful in their opener.

Hamburg Tournament

Lehighton-Hamburg

Lehighton captured the Hamburg Tournament title with an 81-65 win over host Hamburg.

The Indians’ Cole Dietz, who earned Tournament MVP honors, poured in a game-high 29 points, while Joe Roth — who joined Dietz on the All-Tournament team — followed with 16.

Brayden Johnson and Talin Fairchild both contributed double figures, as they finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Andrew Arroya paced the Hawks with a team-high 19 points, while Ty Werley added 15.

In the consolation game of the Hamburg Tournament, Shenandoah Valley earned a 51-45 win over Northern Lehigh.

The Bulldogs’ Connor Simms and Kellen Bauer tied for game-high honors as both players finished with 16 points.

Izauph Lopez ended up with a Blue Devils’ best 14 points, while Brayden Makeema added 10.

In the opening round game of the Hamburg Tournament on Friday, Ty Werly’s 45-point performance powered the host Hawks to an 88-69 victory over Northern Lehigh.

Andrew Arroyo chipped in with 23 points for the winners.

For Northern Lehigh, Connor Simms finished with 25 points, while Kellen Bauer netted 22.

A 21-point fourth quarter — aided by the charity stripe — pushed Panther Valley over the top in a 56-45 victory over Weatherly.

Connor Penberth posted nine of his 14 points in the fourth, which included a 5-for-9 performance from the foul line to help the Panthers pull away for the win. Logan Fisher recorded a PV best with 15 points, while Brady Jones chipped in with 12.

The Wreckers’ Niko Saldukas finished with a game-high 18 points, while Ian McKeegan added 15.

Ryan Confer finished with an Olympians’ high six points, while Brooklyn Yuhas added five.

Marian opened its regular season with an impressive 55-32 non-conference victory over Wilkes-Barre Area.

The Fillies, who trailed early before taking charge, enjoyed a shooting clinic from the Addys — as Addy Marek and Addy Fritz combined for six of the team’s nine three-pointers. Marek led the way with a game-high 15 points, while Fritz followed with 12.

Diamond Thoraton paced the Wolfpack with a team-high 12 points.

Northwestern rebounded after an opening round loss to Eastern Lebanon on Friday, as the Tigers cruised to a 65-15 consolation game win over host Hamburg.

Natalie Conner led all scorers, as the Tiger posted 18 points.

Cara Thomas also connected for double figures with 14 points, while Emma Freeman chipped in with seven.

Shayna Morales finished with six points to pace the Hawks.

Cara Thomas paced the Tigers with a team-high 18 points, while Natalie Conner finished with 12.

Madelynn Stout aided the Raider cause with 17 points.

BOYS WRESTLING

Rough Rider Invitational

Jim Thorpe and Northwestern both competed at the Rough Rider Invitational at Catasauqua over the weekend.

The Olympians (three) and Tigers (seven) collected a combined 10 medals from the tournament.

The Tigers’ Colby Townley (145) and Luke Fugazzotto (189), along with the Olympians’ Aidan Sterling (215), all gained individual titles.

Weston Killar (114) ended with a silver for the Tigers, while Nikolas Schwartz (189) of the Olympians, and both Trent Croll (139) and Vinnie Fugazzotto (172) of Northwestern, all posted third-place finishes.

The Tigers’ Logan Uricchio (107) and Braydon Uricchio (133), as well as the Olympians’ Stepen Korte (139), all finished fourth in their weight classes.

Hazleton-Tamaqua

Hazleton spoiled Tamaqua’s home opener, as the Cougars swept the Blue Raiders

The visiting Cougars swam away with a 107-63 win on the boys’ side. The Raider girls fought to the finish, as the Cougars snuck away with an 84-83 win.

Tamaqua’s Savannah Wilson was a double winner in the meet, taking both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
