Jim Thorpe tree lighting Tuesday night

The Christmas season will kick off Tuesday night on the east side of Jim Thorpe with the third annual Festival of Trees lighting at 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Park along East Tenth Street.

Jim Thorpe borough made 50 trees available for purchase in the park this year at $45 each for individuals, families, businesses or organizations to decorate for the holiday season.

The 6-foot trees are normally decorated in memory of a loved one who has passed away, or in recognition of a local organization or business.

“The decorated trees are looking so beautiful in the park,” Tammy Lombardo-Schatz of the Jim Thorpe Community Watch Group said Monday morning. “We can’t wait to see them all done tomorrow night.”

In addition to the tree lighting, which takes place at 5:30 p.m., the event will include DJ Monty playing Christmas music and a visit from Santa Claus.

Food and drink will be available for purchase.

“We’re hoping this event continues to build each year especially with the park grounds being renovated in the next few years, we hope that adds to the event,” Council President Greg Strubinger said.

The event was started in 2022, following in the footsteps of similar programs in Palmerton and Lehighton.

“It’s such a wonderful event, and we hope to see everyone there this year,” Schatz said.
