Turkey Trot raises money for Bo Tkach fund
A cold, rainy Thanksgiving morning didn’t dampen the spirits Thursday morning in Palmerton, where the streets were filled with runners and walkers during the 2024 Bo Tkach Foundation Turkey Trot.
The annual event raises funds for mental health counseling, scholarships and educational presentations on suicide prevention, OCD and depression.
“I can’t believe how many people are out here this morning with the weather the way it is,” Jim Tkach, co-founder of the Bo Tkach Foundation and chairman of its board of directors, said. “It says a lot about this community and the way they support organizations like ours. We’re so thankful for everyone coming out and making it another great Thanksgiving morning in Palmerton.”
Travis “Bo” Tkach was a talented athlete and a beloved member of his community. He graduated from Northern Lehigh High School in 2001, where he excelled in football and track. Bo was a two-time first team All State football player and a two-time District 11 javelin champion. Bo struggled with mental health issues, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression. He passed away in 2007.
“It’s incredible when you think about all of the support people have given the foundation through participation in events like the Turkey Trot,” Bill O’ Gurek, foundation board member, said. “Nearly $547,000 has been put back into the community since the foundation was started. We use that money for counseling services to help young boys and girls live happier and healthier lives.
“We also use it for scholarships. Around $128,000 in scholarships has been awarded through the years to deserving boys and girls selected by faculty members at area schools. Those individuals represent the ideals of the late Bo Tkach.
“He is someone who would do for others without expecting anything in return.”
The foundation also recently distributed $2,000 checks to food pantries in Summit Hill, Lansford, Nesquehoning, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Palmerton, Weatherly and Slatington/Walnutport.
The money, Tkach said, was meant to support families in need around the holidays.
“We were also just able to provide money to schools to support co-pays for kids who may not have insurance,” Tkach said. “There are so many wonderful things happening and it is thanks to everyone who comes and supports events like the Turkey Trot.”
