Nesquehoning hosts Christmas tree lighting
Christmas is coming to Nesquehoning on Sunday.
Councilwoman Suzanne Smith, one of the organizers, reminds residents that Christmas on the Hill will be held in New Columbus park, complete with Santa and two live reindeer. The event is hosted by the New Columbus and Hauto fire companies.
A firetruck parade, beginning on the west side of town, will kick off at 4:45 p.m. and travel down Catawissa Street before turning up Mermon Avenue and into New Columbus, where it will conclude at the John F. Cerchiaro Memorial Park, North Angelini Avenue.
From there, Santa will welcome visitors for photo opportunities, meet and greets, and live reindeer presentations before officially kicking off the Christmas season at 6:30 p.m. with the tree lighting of 25 sponsored Christmas trees.
Hot chocolate and cookies will be available as part of the event.
Smith said that there has been a great community response, and she hopes it will be a success for the community.
In addition to Christmas on the Hill, Smith announced that the borough community events committee will be hosting its first house decorating contest later in December.
The event is open to all residents and businesses who wish to participate in the contest by calling the borough to get on the list for officials to review during the judging. Deadline to become a participant is Dec. 13.
Judging will take place on Dec. 16 and 17 with winners being announced at borough council’s meeting on Dec. 18.
“We’re really just trying to keep up with this extended community involvement and getting people excited about doing things to bring everybody together,” Smith said.
