Group gives Thanksgiving bounty

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for all you have.

But sometimes families need a little extra help.

That’s why the Summit Hill Sons of American Legion Post 316 have continued their annual tradition to make sure their neighbors have a bountiful meal on Thursday.

The organization recently presented the Summit Hill Food Pantry with a check for $2,000, which was used to feed approximately 67 families this upcoming holiday.

“We’re always happy to do this,” Joe Zubek, SAL finance officer, said. “We know times get tough and no one should be without a good meal on Thanksgiving.

The Sons have been donating money for frozen turkeys on Thanksgiving since the 1990s. This donation brings the total given to the pantry by the Sons to $36,880 since 1999.

On Monday, the Summit Hill Food Pantry distributed the turkeys and other supplemental food to the families in need during its monthly distribution.

The Summit Hill Food Pantry, located in the Summit Hill Heritage Center at the corner of Hazard and Chestnut streets, is a division of Shepherd House, an entity that contracts with government agencies to receive state and federal funding to help the needy. Shepherd House provides some nonperishable food items, but the majority of food distributed in the borough is donated by Summit Hill residents.

The next food pantry distribution for Summit Hill families in need is 10 a.m. Dec. 17.
