Palmerton girls look to compete for league title again

It’s a guarantee that this year’s Palmerton girls’ basketball squad knows what success is.

Whether it came during a win or a loss in the Colonial League championship game, the Bombers have been there the last three seasons.

The same goes within the district postseason, as Palmerton has grabbed either gold or silver in the finals — silver in 2022 and gold in 2021.

As a result, this year’s Bombers are firm believers they can do it one more time.

“Last season, Palmerton won the Colonial League gold, and our girls are determined to do it again,” Bomber girls head coach Jeremy Coleman said. “And we know it will not be easy, but we know it’s within reach.”

Returning from last year’s Colonial League championship program, and motivated to end their varsity careers with a few more accolades, are seniors Ella Baumgardt (G) and Mikayla Pengelly (G.).

Back to lend a helping hand, and hopefully gain another title, are juniors Courtney Connell (F), Cate Morgan (G), Hailey Barry (G), Grace Schneider (G) and Leah Rumfield (G).

While Coleman lost Hailey Andrews, Hannah Barry, Sydney Frantz and Megan Matsko to graduation, the second-year Bomber mentor believes the talent remains for another run.

“We have a good core of returning players that played key roles last season, and several girls waiting in the wings to fill the gaps vacated by our graduating seniors from last year. Several of our players that will have expanded roles this season are eager to demonstrate their skills, and ready to contribute in a variety of ways.

“We anticipate having quality guard play, and a solid interior presence with Courtney Connell. Last season we were a solid defensive team led by Ella Baumgardt, and we limited teams to an average of 28 (point per game).”

In addition, the Bombers are ready to duplicate the same type of defensive intensity this season.

Last year, Palmerton held its opposition to under 28 points in 13 of its 25 games. Meanwhile, it only surrendered 40-something in a win over Notre Dame GP, and its first loss of the season to PM West.

While Baumgardt (5.1 ppg), Pengelly (5.9) and Connell (5.3) will be looked upon to put points on the scoreboard, they, along with Morgan, Barry, Rumfield and Schneider should all help ease the transition of replacing a decent amount of experience from last year’s 23-2 (19-0 in CL) squad.

Adding more depth to the roster is a handful of newcomers — Anna Borger (Fr., G), Dublyn Getch (Fr, G), Alisyn Green (Jr., F), Jalynn Herman (So., F) and Taylor Wasilewski (So., G).

“This season’s Palmerton team will not have much size, however what they might be lacking in physical presence will be replaced with determination and tenacity,” Coleman added. “The loss of Hannah Barry, Sydney Frantz and Megan Matsko as multiple-year starters is a lot of experience to lose, but last year’s Palmerton squad also had some good depth to the roster, and the returners should be primed for another playoff run because of that.

“If we work each day to that end, we will be successful both on and off the court.”
