A Weatherly man faces charges after police said he fled officers who found him passed out behind the wheel at a stop light in Hazleton.
Adam Skonieczny, 41, was arraigned Nov. 14, the morning of the incident, on charges of aggravated assault, fleeing or attempting to elude officer, driving under the influence, disorderly conduct, careless and reckless driving, and restrictions on alcoholic beverages.
He was jailed in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre in lieu of $25,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 5 in Luzerne County Central Court.
According to Hazleton police, officers observed a Ford F-350 pickup truck stopped at a steady green traffic light at Diamond Avenue and Laurel Street at 2:35 a.m.
Skonieczny was in the driver’s seat with an open alcoholic beverage container in a cup holder next to him, police said.
Officers attempted to wake him up by knocking on the window, and when officers identified themselves through the window, Skonieczny refused to comply with orders to open the door, police said.
The man then drove from the scene, almost striking an officer, police said. Officers pursued the pickup west on Diamond Avenue, south on Church Street and east on Fern Street before Skonieczny stopped at Fern Street and Lee Court.
Skonieczny was removed from the pickup and taken into custody. He was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton, for treatment.
