Eldred supervisors
The Eldred Township Board of Supervisors is set to meet at 7 p.m. today at the township’s municipal building in Kunkletown. Call 610-381-4252 for information.
Night of Worship
Tonight, Effort UMC will be hosting a night of contemporary style worship. All ages are welcome.
A free dinner (with child-friendly options) will be available from 5-6 p.m. The worship is from 6-7 p.m.
That worship will be led by “The Kings of Queen Street.”
The nursery will be available during the time of worship, for children ages 5 and under. Two certified child care volunteers will be present to take care of the little ones.
Scout committee
The Boy Scout Troop 102 Committee meeting will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the American Legion Post Home in Gilbert.
Giving tree set
The Giving Tree at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church began on Saturday. Angel Tags, sneakers, socks and underwear tags will benefit local children in need through the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network.
Senior male and female tags in yellow are for homebound and nursing home residents from the parish, while red tags are for children in need in the parish.
Gifts should be placed under the Giving Tree before Dec. 6 and should be unwrapped with tag securely attached.
Soup orders due
Effort UMC’s monthly soup sale ends today. Being offered are roasted harvest vegetable and roast pork with cabbage and potatoes. Pickup is Sunday after the church services.
Public hearing
A public hearing in regard to a proposed fare increase by the Monroe County Transportation Authority is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at MCTA in Swiftwater. The Pocono Pony is planning to raise fares for fixed routes, beginning Jan. 1, 2025, for the first time since July 2014.
Pack the Mack
Operation Touch of Home is holding its fall drive from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Gilbert ShopRite. Donations can also be dropped off at the American Legion Post Home on Fairgrounds Road in Gilbert.
The day’s “Pack the Mack” will be at the Legion. There is a list of suggested items that troops overseas would appreciate.
Donation categories include food and drink, hygiene items, certain activity items, batteries, etc., but again, no glass items. However, no glass containers or aerosols and no liquids more than 16 ounces is the reminder.
Pantry open
The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday.
WPCL craft show
The 2024 WPCL Craft Show will take place Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Vendor applications are now being accepted. Interested folks are asked to check the library website or stop in for an application until 8 p.m. today.
Saturday benefit
Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is holding a spaghetti supper and silent auction from 4-7 p.m. Saturday. It is a two-for-one benefit for Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network and Zion’s efforts to replace the church steeple.
Dinner includes spaghetti, homemade meatballs, salad, bread, drinks and homemade desserts.
Senior luncheon
Our Lady Queen of Peace is holding its senior luncheon after the 12:10 Mass on Monday.
Seekers meet
On Monday, Effort UMC’s group, The Seekers, will be meeting in Fellowship Hall at 10 a.m.
Aid for 40 ‘angels’
The “Angel Tree” at Effort UMC was set up in the Narthex as of Nov. 8. This year the church has 40 “Angels” that it is supporting through the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network
Anyone who would like to take an “Angel” is reminded to bring the unwrapped gifts back to the church with the child’s number on the gift(s) no later than Dec. 7. The church representative must have the gifts delivered to PVEN between 8 a.m.-noon on Dec. 9.
Orders pickup
At Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, orders for three items for Thanksgiving — filling, apple dumplings and celery seed dressing — are to be picked up at 5 p.m. Friday.
Bake sale orders, as hosted by Effort UMC’s Youth Group, are to be picked up on Sunday. Also ready for pickup will be the ordered soup sale items.
Knights’ event
The Knights of Columbus Council 7141 is sponsoring a family pasta and meatball award dinner from 5:30-9:30 p.m., Sunday. Tickets must be purchased in advance, but children 12 and under can eat for free.
The event offers music, door prizes, awards and raffles.
Donations due
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is collecting turkeys and nonperishable trimmings for meals for the less-fortunate.
Donations maybe dropped of at the church office by Sunday.
WEHA football
The West End Home Association at the Gilbert Legion will host its usual NFL football event on Sunday at 1 p.m. It is an open-to-community event. It will also hold a Monday Night Football event at 7 p.m.
The kitchen is open from noon to 10 p.m.
Annual collection
The Youth Group at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is accepting items for the St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in Scranton, which has needs of toiletries for it annual Christmas Shoe Box Project. The kitchen collects items and packs them in individual boxes and distributes them to those in need.
Items needed include two-in-one shampoo and conditioner; deodorant for both men and women; socks for both men and women; lip balm; nail clippers; and wipes.
People can drop off any donations at the church office or in the designated box in the atrium.
Grief support
The Western Pocono Community Library has partnered with St. Luke’s Hospice to offer free monthly adult grief support. Meetings are free and open to everyone.
The next meetings are at 1 p.m. next Wednesday (grief at the holidays session) and Dec. 11.

Toy drive
The PVEN has begun its Holiday Toy Program. It will continue through Nov. 25.
Certain documentation is needed to apply; proof of address for current month (lease or property tax information); birth certificate and/or custody paperwork per child(ren) being registered; proof of household income for current month (pay stubs, cash assistance if applicable) must include all members of the household.
Families will receive an appointment to shop the PVEN Toy Store for certain items

Pickup orders
Just a reminder that folks who ordered filling or gravy at St. Matthew’s Church in Kunkletown must pickup their orders from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 26.
Community dinner
The American Legion, Post 927, Gilbert, is holding its annual Community Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, in the Main Hall.

Volunteers are needed to help in various areas.
The Post is accepting donations of frozen turkeys from 14 to 20 pounds through Nov. 24. People can contact Shirlene at 570-350-7157.
It is not only eat-in and celebrate with others, but according to Shirlene, one can also order takeout.
Last year, the Legion hosted about 400 folks, all told.
Poinsettia orders
According to Effort UMC, it’s time to order poinsettias. All orders must be in to the church office no later than Dec. 1. The plants will be in a 6½-inch pot.
Order forms can be found on the church’s Welcome Center.
Dec. 1 breakfast
The Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company is hosting a breakfast from 7:30-11:30 a.m. Dec. 1 at the firehouse at 597 Kunkletown Road.
The buffet menu includes scrambled eggs, home fries, toast, ham, bacon, sausage, chipped beef, French toast, orange juice, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and milk.
Block shoot plus
The Kunkletown Rod & Gun Club is holding a block shoot and meat raffle starting at 11 a.m. on Dec. 1. The public is welcome. It is a 12-gauge shotgun only event.
The club is located at 122 Gun Club Lane, Saylorsburg.

Deadline coming
America250PA is now accepting applications for the first round of semiquincentennial grants to help celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America.
The grants are available to any Pennsylvania municipal entity, county or registered nonprofit organization to be used toward programming, projects or events that focus on education, preservation, innovation and celebration of the semiquincentennial. The grants require an equal match from the recipient.
The deadline to apply for the first round of grants is Dec. 15. A second round will be held in the spring.
Membership class
Effort UMC will hold a new membership class at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 12.
