Carbon increases pay for future officials

Carbon County elected officials will see raises in 2028 and 2029, and one part-time position will become full time.

During a special meeting of the county commissioners on Tuesday evening, the board unanimously voted to give elected officials 3% raises in both 2028 and 2029.

The board is required to set the salaries years out so that they are not voting to give themselves and the other elected officials raises while serving their four-year term, per the county code.

Commissioners’ Chairman Mike Sofranko said that the action falls in line with what the rest of the county employees have been averaging on raises.

He noted that in 2024, the county’s elected officials received a 1% raise, and will receive 2% raises in 2025, 2026 and 2027.

The board also approved in a 2-1 vote to change the county coroner position from part time to full time in 2028. Commissioner Rocky Ahner cast the sole no vote.

In an email Wednesday morning, Ahner said that there are just too many unknowns for him to have voted yes.

Questions he has include how the department will be restructured, staffing, and coverage.

“Currently the salary is $32,321,” Ahner said of the coroner position. “(In) 2028, (it) will increase to $74,709 and 2029 will be $76,950.

Last month, the board tabled all motion after questions came up regarding how a change in employment status for the coroner position would work since salaries through 2027 had already been set.

It was noted at that time, that the reason for the request was due to the amount of workload, paperwork and administrative duties and the time the coroner has been putting in with the position.
