Weatherly area man charged with arson

A Weatherly man faces arson and related charges after a report of an unattended fire along East Main Street in Weatherly Saturday during a countywide burn ban.

Ian Keating, 42, was arraigned on charges of arson endangering a property, risking catastrophe, reckless burning, dangerous burning and two counts of disorderly conduct, and released on $150,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled before District Judge Joseph Homanko Dec. 4.

According to police, the Citizens Fire Co. No. 1 of Weatherly was dispatched to 789 E. Main St. for an unattended fire, and found household furniture burning. Firefighters contained and extinguished the fire, which had been left unattended during dry, windy conditions with gasoline left several feet from where the fire was burning. The fire risked not only the primary home at that address, but homes on either side, police said.

The homeowner, Keating, arrived back at the residence and officers informed him of the violations and of the dangers of burning during a countywide, red flag burning ban, police said.

The Carbon County District Attorney’s office approved the charges and Keating was taken into custody without incident from a residence in McAdoo.
