‘Get Smart’ 1960s TV show comes to Pleasant Valley stage as a play

Members of the Pleasant Valley High School Drama Club will take the stage on Nov. 22 in their fall drama production, “Get Smart.”

This comedic play is based on the American television show of the same name, which first aired in 1965. It starred Don Adams as Maxwell Smart, AKA Agent 86, a spy trying to mirror James Bond but mixed with the bumbling of Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther.

Owen Gordon, a PVHS senior who plays the part of Maxwell Smart, likes his character.

“I think he’s a real pretty funny guy. He’s a very nice person and a bit clumsy as well,” Gordon said. “People underestimate him and his ability, but he gets it done at the end in ways people might not expect.”

Dan Mulligan, one of the directors of the play, said the play is an adaptation by Christopher Sergel. Many of the lines in the play came from the pilot episode of the television show, which had characters that alluded to the Cold War. The show was one that Mulligan’s favorites as a kid.

“I’m enjoying this because I loved the TV show,” Mulligan said.

In this adaptation of the story, Maxwell Smart and his female counterpart Agent 99 work with their boss, Chief, as part of the U.S. Spy Agency, CONTROL. Their mission is to stop the evil spy agency, KAOS, headed by the equally evil Mr. Big. KAOS is trying to steal the deadly Inthermo weapon created by two brilliant scientists, Professor Dante and Professor Zalinka.

CONTROL has several assets working in various locations conducting surveillance. They include Agent 44, Agent 13, the secretary Miss Finch, and Hogkins. And KAOS, of course, has its own covert spies, who create a diversion to steal the Inthermo and kidnap Norwegian Princess Ingrid.

Marcie Mulligan is also a director and Donna Morris is a production assistant. The show is performed by a cast of 28 student actors.

“We are doing something a little different this time,” Dan Mulligan said about the play. They are going to use a projector to show scenes and videos on a backdrop instead of a standard constructed backdrop.

“It will help to tell the story in a technical way,” he said. “That will be a fresh look.”

Sarah Larregui, a senior playing the part of the secretary Miss Finch, said, “I really enjoy this play.”

Larregui said her character changes from who she is in the beginning.

“You wouldn’t expect her to become who she becomes,” she said.

Larregui went on to say, “It’s a funny, enjoyable play and the leads are amazing at what they do. It’s really fun.”

Other cast members include Jeneria Williams as Agent 99; Isaac Mitchell as Chief; Olivia Joseph as Mr. Big; Sylvia Calhoun, Professor Dante; Alayna Boland, Professor Zalinka; Zuzanna Romanczyk, Agent 44; Autumn Cline, Agent 13; Sam Lowell, Hogkins; Megan O’Brien, Norwegian Princess Ingrid.

The KAOS spies are played by Steven Roberti, Sophia Dobson, Kailey Grave De Peralta and Autumn Cline. The cast is rounded out with Emerie Gonzalez, Brooke Burke, Leo Phillips, Omar Martinez, Julian Dempster, Khloe Gutai, Cindy Page, Chelsea Buleje, Dylan Carroll, Rachel Costello and Kiera Jeffreys.

In addition to Friday, the play also will be performed at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets can be purchased at the door by cash or check only.
