Towamensing official stresses burn ban’s importance

The Towamensing Township Board of Supervisors chairman emphasized the importance of the burn ban at a recent meeting.

“It’s popcorn dry out there; it’s a big deal,” Guy Seifert said of the ongoing drought and the burn ban. “Be very, very cautious.”

He also discussed the recent Blue Mountain fire, which was battled by more than 250 firefighters and took nearly a week to be contained.

In other business this month, the supervisors had a lengthy discussion about Old Forest Street.

There was discussion about two lots and who gets access to them, and how. The supervisors also discussed vacating the entire street.

Another option is to have the township keep only a small area that connects with Forest Street.

By the end of the year, Greg Haas, engineer, and Thomas Nanovic, solicitor, will review the situation and advise the board.

Also:

• The supervisors approved time extensions for David Whiteman for the Owl Creek Road minor subdivision and for Lehighton Group LLC Lakeside Self Storage Facility.

• Installation of shutters has been completed at the one-room Greenzweig schoolhouse and prices are being obtained for painting.

• The Historical Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
