PVMS original production opens tonight

The Pleasant Valley Middle School Drama Club has created its third original production, “Breaking Benjamins: The (Almost) True Story of the Lottery Kids.”

The kids will perform their play at 7 tonight, and 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Pleasant Valley Middle School auditorium.

Alexandria Gibb, the co-director of the drama club, said the play was written and created by about 70 students with some help from herself and Amanda Altemose, the play’s co-director.

“We wanted to give the students an opportunity to not only perform, but also to be part of the creative process,” Gibb said. “This play reflects their creativity and vision, and we’re so proud of how they’ve brought it to life.”

Altemose added, “The students have taken this story to new heights with their imagination. Breaking Benjamin is a fun, whimsical adventure that explores what happens when middle school dreams come true in unexpected ways.”

The storyline of Breaking Benjamins follows a class of middle school students whose lives change instantly when their teacher, Ms. Hawthorne, splits her $2 billion winnings — the world’s largest lottery jackpot — with them. Each student receives $250 million. Now, they can pursue their wildest middle school dreams.

As their imaginations run wild, the play explores the humorous, chaotic, and unpredictable consequences of the “lottery kids” new found wealth.

Two very different parts of the play are the favorites for student actors Meghan Worden and Kayla “Jasper” Finn, who were also two of the writers of the play. The beginning is Worden’s favorite, while the end is Finn’s.

“I really like how funny it is and how the classroom is — crazy, chaotic but everyone is friends,” said Worden, who plays the part of Gigi.

“I love the last scene,” said Finn, who plays the part of Ada. “We get to have one of our principals, Mr. (Ramon) Rodriguez, on stage.”

Harri Sullivan, who was one of the writers and plays the part of one of the classmates named Trevor, sums it up. “We’re going to make you laugh, make you smile.”

The student writers include Angela Orach, Norah Bird, Paige Delancey, Kayla Finn, Allie Fors, Rebecca Hardy, Hayden Impellizeri, Abigail Johnston, Lillian Lamb, Jada Lewis, Mazzy Monroe, Harrison Sullivan, Lily Sullivan, and Meghan Worden, and characters from the imagination of Emma Stenger and the 2023-2024 PVMS Newspaper Club.

The cast also includes: Thomas Cline, Aria Hamill, Audrey Freyer, Sara Correia, Lennox Tomasch, Rebecca Hardy, Leah Santangelo, Emma Stenger, Sophia Tsikhinia, Shelby Jensen, Katherine Stock, Dana Rivera Cruz, Chelsea Mitchell, Sora Andrews, Rosie Keiter, Audrey Alicea, Jacqueline Hollman, Kai Dempster, Sandra Romanczyk, Kaylin Jeffreys, Gabbie DeRosa, Madison Zorn, Kinley Heller, Katie Rivera, Chelsea Mitchell, Almaryls Ortiz, Reyna Muñoz, Delaila Simmonds, Savannah Bilby, Juliana Torres, Sophia Reed, Madisyn Mozelesky, Olivia Hayes, Parker Mease, Arianna Earling, Josiah Lara, Gianna Shane, Ivy Kinsey, Jacqueline Hollman, Emilie Grochowski, Coralee Wilson, Elleigh Flynn and Iliana Green.
