Delano man dies, another injured in Schuylkill crash

A Delano man died and a Hazle Township man was injured in a two-vehicle crash at about 3 p.m. Thursday on the Morea Road in Mahanoy Township.

State police at the Frackville barracks said Thomas Flaherty, 65, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Schuylkill County Deputy Al Barnes.

Police said Michael Perchak, 70, of Hazle Township, suffered a head injury and was transported by personnel from the Mahanoy City Ambulance to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township.

Police said the crash occurred when Flaherty was traveling east in a Dodge Caravan in the area of 1200 Morea Road, near the Fabcon plant, and Perchak was traveling west in a Peterbilt tractor-trailer.

They said Flaherty’s vehicle left the southside of the eastbound lane and struck a traffic sign, then crossed into the westbound lane and struck Perchak’s truck. The tractor-trailer then struck a guardrail and went down and embankment.

Police said the Morea Road, at the intersection with Burma Road and the intersection with Vulcan Hill Road, was closed for several hours while they investigated the scene.
