Coaldale pursues LSA grant for holiday street lighting

Coaldale Borough Council appointed a new vice president to fill the role vacated upon the resignation of Councilwoman Yvonne Stoffey in August.

Council took nominations for the position, with Councilman Jacob Adamitis nominating himself, and Councilwoman Angela Krapf nominating Councilwoman Kim Gavornik.

A roll-call vote for Adamitis saw three in favor of the appointment. A subsequent vote for Gavornik garnered support from four, making her vice president. Gavornik, however, did not vote for herself.

In an unrelated matter, council will likely apply for a Local Share Account grant to purchase more Christmas and holiday lights.

It sent out letters requesting support to local communities, as well as to state Sen. David Argall and state Rep. Jamie Barton.

The grant requested will be between $30,000 and $50,000.

Borough secretary Beth Martinico said she’s been looking at prices and designs for the lights.

“We didn’t want to just keep it for Christmas,” she said of the holiday displays.

The existing 20 lights would be replaced, and 10 to 15 more would be requested to place along Main Street to the village of Seek. A few more lights would be placed on Route 209, if the borough gets the grant.

Other actions

In other business, council agreed to do the following:

• Prepare a resolution that will set fines for those who park illegally during winter months. Council is seeking information from neighboring municipalities on fines and towing procedures.

• Advertise dates for its 2025 meetings, which will tentatively be moved to the roomier Coaldale Complex. The location can be changed back to Coaldale Borough Hall if council sees fit.

• Agreed to purchase exterior lights for the Coaldale Complex.

• Tabled the sale of a truck that had been used by the Coaldale Police Department. Council has received interest from Tamaqua, Minersville and the Coaldale Fire Department.
