Conservation group adds benches at Locust Lake Park

New benches were recently added to the amphitheater at Locust Lake State Park in Barnesville.

Robert Sweeney, manager of Locust Lake and Tuscarora state parks, said the construction was a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

“It is a student conservation organization that mobilizes young adults, ages 18-25 years old,” Sweeney explained of the outdoor corps.

The crews are paid, and receive skills training, professional development, and environmental educational opportunities while working on recreation and conservation projects on the commonwealth’s public lands. Support comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, according to DCNR.

The corps was established in 2016, and since then, more than 1,200 young people have completed the program.

This year, members have been working at more than 100 parks, forests, and communities on projects such as trail work, habitat enhancement, tree planting and storm damage restoration.
