New Jersey woman dies in Chestnuthill crash

A 47-year-old woman from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, died in a one-vehicle crash at 10:46 p.m. Saturday on Route 209 in Chestnuthill Township.

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks said the woman was a passenger in a Kia Soul that was northbound on Route 209 at a high rate of speed, just south of Pleasant Valley Lane, when it left the road and struck a large utility pole. The Monroe County coroner’s office identified the woman as Rebecca Martin.

Police said the operator of the vehicle, who they did not identify, is suspected to have been driving while under the influence of alcohol. Police said the driver was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono, East Stroudsburg, for medical treatment.

Police said the crash involved a reported entrapment and said the victim was not wearing a seat belt when the car crashed.

Police were assisted at the scene by personnel from the West End Fire Department, Lehigh Valley EMS and the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
