Lansford Borough will be placing new trash cans around the borough, thanks to the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau.
The borough ordered 24 new cans, replacing aging cans that were subject to abuse.
The new trash cans have tops with openings on the side to prevent people from placing household garbage and other items inside, and will be weighted down to keep them in place, said Councilwoman Gwyneth Collevechio.
The Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau offered to purchase the new cans, which have a logo reading, “Pick Up the Poconos.com/Do Your Part.”
Lansford Alive also offered to purchase new trash cans for the borough, as it had litter barrels in the borough’s business district and parks for 20 years, and it had been one of the group’s first service projects.
The borough and the community group discussed its continued involvement in the project and the signs on the receptacles.
Collevechio on Monday said that no additional trash cans were purchased by the group to date, only the cans the PMVB bought.
If Lansford Alive purchases additional cans, they will be placed in the borough’s business district in this spring.
Council President Bruce Markovich said the 24 cans cost approximately $3,197.
