Carbon, Schuylkill played key roles
The results of Carbon County and Schuylkill County General Election balloting on Tuesday showed voters in those counties did their part in helping President-elect Donald J. Trump and down-ticket U.S. Senate and Pennsylvania row office Republicans to win their statewide races.
In the president’s race, as well as that of Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Casey’s unsuccessful re-election bid, and for three Republican state row office races, the Carbon and Schuylkill vote totals gave the Republicans significant advantages that helped them win statewide.
In Carbon, voters gave the five GOP candidates over 20,000 votes each.
Trump carried Carbon in convincing 2-1 fashion, tallying 23,383 votes, compared to Democrat Kamala Harris’ 11,121. A breakdown of the voting showed a 20,323 to 7,270 advantage for Trump in precinct voting, while Harris edged the former president 3,851 to 3,060 in mail-in voting.
In the Senate race, it was not much different, as Republican Dave McCormick collected 22,296 votes in Carbon that contributed to his upset win that gained him a six-year term in Washington. Casey totaled 11,317 in the county.
And in the three statewide races — attorney general, auditor general and treasurer — the numbers were comparatively similar, as each candidate won Carbon soundly en route to statewide triumphs.
Republican Dave Sunday won the attorney general’s balloting in Carbon over Democrat Eugene DePasquale. The margin was 22,090 to 10,780.
In the auditor general’s race, GOP incumbent Tim DeFoor defeated Democrat Malcolm Kenyatta, 21,995 to 10,236, in Carbon balloting.
And Republican Treasurer Stacy Garrity won Carbon by a 22,320 to 10,162 margin over Democrat Erin McClelland.
