Bresnahan pulls off upset, unseats Cartwright in U.S. 8th District

There will be a new congressman in Pennsylvania’s 8th District after Republican Rob Bresnahan Jr. of Dallas Township recorded an upset victory in Tuesday’s general election balloting.

Bresnahan defeated longtime Rep. Matt Cartwright of Moosic, Lackawanna County, by a margin of 192,784 to 185,360 to win a two-year term in Washington.

The district includes all of Lackawanna, Pike and Wayne counties and parts of Luzerne and Monroe counties, in the townships of Barrett, Chestnuthill, Coolbaugh, Hamilton, Jackson, Middle Smithfield, Paradise, Pocono, Price and parts of Ross.

“I am humbled and honored by the trust the people of northeastern Pennsylvania have placed in me to serve as their voice in the House of Representatives,” Bresnahan said. “I sincerely thank Congressman Matt Cartwright for his many years of service. While we may not always agree on how to best serve, I know he has always acted in what he believes is the best interest of northeastern Pennsylvania.”

The Republican, who was running for political office for the first time, recorded huge wins in Luzerne, Pike and Wayne counties that made the difference in the matchup.

In Luzerne, Bresnahan won by a margin of 68,185 to 57,318, while in Pike he won 20,501 to 13,631. In Wayne County balloting, Bresnahan won 19,115 to 9,783.

The large advantages helped him outdistance Cartwright’s wins in his home county of Lackawanna and the eight townships in Monroe County. In Lackawanna, Cartwright won 64,186 to 50,395, while the Monroe voters gave the congressman a 40,442 to 34,588 advantage.

“I am eager to get to work for our district,” Bresnahan said. “I give my word that as their Congressman, there will be no R or D next to my name, only N-E-P-A. We will bring back opportunities, stand up for our values and fight for a brighter future for our communities.”

Bresnahan is a venture capitalist who founded RPB Ventures, a company that develops, rehabilitates, builds and markets properties.

Cartwright has served in the U.S. House since January 2013.
