Respectfully Yours: Speaker tries to overcome rude person in audience

Dear Jacquelyn,

From time to time, my job requires me to give presentations. Public speaking makes me uncomfortable and I find it difficult to hide my nervousness. I found adequately preparing and practice makes presenting less difficult. However, I was not prepared for an encounter with a rude individual in the audience that interrupted my presentation. What is the best way to successfully proceed with a presentation when you lose your focus?

Dear Reader,

The fear of public speaking is common and it gets exasperated when we encounter a person that makes us lose our composure.

Preparation and practice are key to a flawless presentation. When we learn the material and own it, we come across as a confidant and credible speaker.

The goal is to be self-confident and engage the audience. At some point in your presentation career, it’s unfortunate but you will come in contact with someone that will challenge you. I refer to these individuals affectionately as hecklers.

The good news is you can earn their respect when you handle the situation properly. Saying something like “Thank you for your input” shows you heard them and can handle their misbehavior in a professional manner.

This particular individual was testing you. The best way to handle an individual that wants extra attention is by adapting and connecting with them.

Sometimes, simply walking over and standing next to the difficult person, invading their personal space is enough to disarm them. Over time you will master a control of the room by seamlessly defusing the situation.

Each audience is different; therefore, each presentation will be different.

What remains a constant, and is critical out of the gate, is projecting energy and enthusiasm.

Respectfully Yours,

Jacquelyn
