Area school districts receive funds for repairs
Area school districts received nearly $4 million in grant funding for infrastructure repairs, such as new roofs and windows.
Pleasant Valley, Northern Lehigh and Panther Valley received the largest grants locally, capturing $2.7 million of the funding. The remainder went to Palmerton Area, Jim Thorpe Area, Tamaqua Area and Weatherly Area.
A total of 208 projects totaling $175 million statewide were approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority last week, Gov. Josh Shapiro announced.
The funding comes from the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program, which provides grants of up to $5 million to public school districts and career and technical schools for safety and environmental repair projects.
“Our students deserve safe and healthy school to learn in and our teachers deserve modern and well-maintained classrooms to teach in,” Shapiro said. “So, when I took office, I worked to bring Democrats and Republicans together to invest in our kids and their future.
“Here in Pennsylvania, we’re working together to get stuff done and deliver real results for the people we serve.”
The program, which was created in the 2023-23 bipartisan budget, also requires the school district or schools to provide a 25% match for the funded project.
A breakdown of the funding and projects follows:
• Jim Thorpe Area, $322,000, for roof repair project.
• Northern Lehigh, $904.350, for asbestos flooring abatement in Northern Lehigh High School.
• Palmerton Area, $100,000, for window replacement project. The district had sought $1.2 million for windows at S.S. Palmer and Parkside Education Center.
