Police: man charged after attempting to light himself, field on fire

A 42-year-old man from Whitehall is facing drug possession charges after police responded to an incident at 8:58 p.m. Oct. 19 at a property on Welshtown Road, Washington Township.

Police said they were dispatched to the residence to a report of a man attempting to light himself and the neighboring cornfield on fire.

They said when police arrived there was no fire remaining but a man with char marks on his clothing ran from the residence.

Police said they were told by two occupants of the home that the fleeing man was the person who attempted to light himself on fire and that he fled because of having an outstanding domestic warrant out against him.

Police said they chased the man through the cornfield until he climbed up a tree stand. When troopers found him, the man jumped from the stand but was subsequently apprehended.

Police said the outstanding warrant was confirmed and the man was frisked, at which time police found him to be in possession of suspected methamphetamines.
