Carbon gives options for gun permit applications

Applying for a license to carry in Carbon County is getting easier.

On Thursday, Sheriff Dan Zeigler announced that residents wishing to apply for a concealed carry permit or renew their permit can now do so either online or through the mail. Until now, people needed to make an appointment with the sheriff’s office to apply, creating long wait times in the office.

The change went into effect on Monday.

“We hope that it’s going to cut down on wait times,” he said, noting that his office receives approximately 2,500 new applications annually.

He added that a flyer with a QR code will be posted at all county buildings, as well as local gun shops so people can easily navigate to the new online application.

The website explains everything a person needs to apply for the permit, including costs, eligibility and more.

Once the application is received, Zeigler said that his office will complete the background check and process the application before notifying the resident that it is ready. The process should take approximately seven days.

“This will make it easier for a lot of folks,” he said. “We will call them when their application is approved and set up an appointment so they can come in. They’re then probably in and out of the sheriff’s office in five minutes.”
