St. John Neumann students stage annual walk
They walked outdoors with their classmates, ate pizza and learned lessons in science.
More importantly, students at St. John Neumann Regional School in Palmerton gave it their all to raise awareness on Friday.
It was all part of their annual Walkathon, the school’s biggest fundraiser of the year.
Jim Pompa, event chairperson, said 65 students in grades K-8 took part in the expedition, which covered portions of downtown Palmerton.
“We’d like to give thanks to our local business owners who sponsor the event, the students, and our parents and families who dedicate their time and efforts into making this a great success,” Pompa said.
The event’s main sponsors include Lehigh Gap Exteriors, Mountain Valley Spay, Neuter, & Vaccine Clinic, FlowerTent and Forest Inn Service Center.
Dr. Chris Heery, school principal, said that the Allentown Central High School Marching Band and cheering crew also performed.
Among the educational activities were Super Science & Amazing Art of PA by Cathy Seacrest of Lehighton.
Before the walk, Kerri Jahelka, owner of Dedicated Fitness in Palmerton, gave the students a motivational message.
It certainly worked, as the students eagerly participated.
“I liked how we worked out before we walked because it’s much more helpful,” said third grader Maryssa Rex.
Classmate Aubree Hunsicker added the event is important because it’s about “helping other people.”
Fifth grader Mason Cuyler said he looked forward to lunch when the students were set to eat pizza.
Both he and fellow fifth grader Jackson Amorim said they also looked forward to their treats from Dunkin’.
Pompa said this year’s goal was to raise $40,000.
He said they were close to $30,000 having been raised at the time of the walk, courtesy of business sponsors and local and family donations.
Pompa said last year’s event raised about $28,000 of the $40,000 goal.
He said that anyone interested in sponsoring the school may contact 610-826-2354, sjnrswalkathon@gmail.com.
Money raised from past years has helped to update the school’s computer labs, purchase additional Smart Boards (interactive whiteboards), new text books and educational field trips for its students.
