Historical society to host Switchback discussion

The Nesquehoning Historical Society is continuing its 2024 Presentation Series on local history.

Join the group as local author and historian Vince Hydro presents a survey of the famous Mauch Chunk Switchback Railroad. The show is entitled: “The Switchback Railroad: Selected Scenes from Then and Then and Now.”

There will be two showings; doors open an hour before the presentation.

The first show takes place at 6 p.m. on Oct. 28; while the second will take place at 2 p.m. on Nov. 2.

Following his presentation, Hydro will be signing copies of his book, “The Summit Hill and Mauch Chunk Switchback Railroad: A Pictorial History,” as well as copies of his other books on local history.

The events will take place at the NHS Museum, 157 W. Railroad St., corner of Ratcliff and Railroad streets in Nesquehoning. There is parking available in the large lot located next to the museum.

The event is open to the public free of charge, although donations to the historical society are welcome.

Bus trip

In addition, the historical society is hosting a bus trip to Lancaster on Thanksgiving Day for the showing of “White Christmas” at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater.

The bus will leave the CVS parking lot at 9 a.m. on Nov. 28 and arrive at the theater at 11:30 a.m. for a buffet lunch before the 1 p.m. show. Tentative time to arrive back home is 6 p.m.

The tour cost includes bus accommodation, lunch and the performance.

Reservations and payment are due by Nov. 8.
