Brush fire keeps Lehigh firefighters busy

No one was reported injured after an outside odor investigation Saturday morning in Emerald.

Tito Burgos, fire chief, Emerald Fire Company, said that firefighters were dispatched at around 11:30 a.m. in the area of Main Street in Emerald.

Burgos said that upon arrival, firefighters found the fire was above the Heritage Trail on the area called the Slate Banks.

“We had to gather crews together, it’s so dangerous up there,” Burgos said. “There’s quite a few hills up there; it was a very difficult terrain.”

Burgos said his deputy fire chief, who is also a state fire warden went in and was doing recon. There were no injuries.

In all, he said there were 5.1 acres, half of which is privately owned, and the other half Washington Township’s.

Burgos said the fire was contained at around 5:30 p.m., but added crews went back to the scene from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“Mainly hot spots, cutting some trees down,” he said. “DCNR (Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) was instrumental; they were on scene the whole time.”

Burgos said that throughout the course of the two days, they had 150 personnel, mainly forestry people and support people.

“It was a very fast progressive fire, we had to take precautions to protect homes and structures,” he said. “There was no monetary damage as far as any structures.”

Burgos said that a burn ban was put in effect Monday morning.

“The fires are getting progressively worse,” he said. “The lack of rain, low humidity.”
