Wilson shuts out Indians

For the Lehighton boys’ soccer team, it just wasn’t their night.

The sixth-seeded Indians fell behind early in the opening half, and couldn’t battle back in a 7-0 loss to third-seeded and host Wilson in a District 11 Class 3A quarterfinal playoff game Monday.

Owen Miller and Givanchy Durandisse each tallied a pair of goals to help the Warriors explode for four first-half goals. Wilson will meet second-seed Southern Lehigh in a semifinal game Wednesday night.

Despite the defeat, Lehighton head coach Dave Yob was pleased with his team’s effort.

Bryce Miller had three saves, and Carlin West and C.J. Strohl each added a pair in the net for the Tribe.

Lehighton finished the season with an overall 7-11-1 mark. Wilson won the regular-season meeting, 5-1 on Sept. 18.

“We played hard and didn’t quit, “said Yob. “We were just out-gunned tonight.”

Lehighton began the season with losses to Bangor and Moravian, but rallied to win four of its next five games, highlighted by a 3-2 overtime victory over Northern Lehigh. From there, the Tribe struggled to find consistency the remainder of the season, as they only mustered a two-game winning streak late in the season.

Senior Jesse Waksmunski led the team with 10 goals and 22 points. Fellow seniors Jacib Anthony had six goals, and Jaxson Strauss added five goals. Miller recorded 180 saves.

Heading into the season, Yob had high expectations.

“I thought we would do better during the season,” stressed Yob. “We had a good winter league season, and did well at team camp. We suffered some nagging injuries throughout the season, and just had a hard time scoring. Sometimes, things just don’t click. We graduate nine seniors, so we’ll have our work cut out for us next year.”
