Walnutport Canal Days offers attractions, activities

After 42 years, the Walnutport Canal Association was joined by The Slatington Lions Club, Lehigh Township Lions Club and the Lehigh Township Lady Lions Club to host Walnutport Canal Days on Saturday and Sunday under sunny skies.

The Walnutport Canal Association had both its Locktenders House and museum open for tours. Other attractions included a reptile display and a petting zoo. Also, a Kids Corner was popular with the children, who got to paint a pumpkin and take it home.

Food items available at the event included walking tacos, turkey barbecue, pulled pork barbecue, assorted cobblers, french fries, perogies, halupkies, halushki and freshly squeezed lemonade.

Debbie Becker from the Lehigh Township Lady Lion’s Club helped run the basket raffle.

“We had 79 baskets and 19 gift cards,” she said. “I want to thank all of the contributors that donated for the raffle. It was a great turnout and next year will be even better.”

The 42nd annual Walnutport Canal Festival was held in October 2023, and was to have marked the final year for the event.

However, the area Lions Clubs stepped up to keep the heritage celebration going, with a new look and a new name.
