October 17, 1957 — Three area football games are postponed due to a flu epidemic that has ripped through the Panther Valley-Carbon County schools. Officials at the respective districts announce the postponements of the Lansford-West Hazleton, Tamaqua-Nesquehoning and Palmerton-Nazareth contests. More than half of the Blue Raiders squad were sick, while half of the Bombers club were ill. A day later, Coaldale and Lehighton officials also call off their games because of too many players being sick.
