Slatington Borough Council approved with regret the resignation letter from Police Chief Greg Winokur, effective Nov. 16.
Winokur said, “It was not an easy decision to make. I made a lot of friends, being that I’m not from the area. I will be retiring after being in law enforcement for 24 years. It will be good for my family.”
He thanked borough council for being a positive influence.
In February 2023, council hired Winokur as new chief of police at a rate of $95,000 per year plus benefits.
Winokur came from the Bensalem Police Department, where he served as an administrative sergeant.
Winokur continues to help borough residents.
Nancy Treskot from The Venture Group of Slatington, Monday night informed the council of a homeless person living under the pavilion at Seventh Street.
“He has been there for three weeks. Residents that live in that area are complaining,” she said, adding that the man has taken a bath in Trout Creek, which runs alongside the pavilion.
“I cannot rent out the pavilion because he is there,” Treskot said. “I understand that there is not an ordinance about the homeless, but there are places that could help him.”
Winokur said, “We are aware of the gentlemen. The situation will be rectified by tomorrow afternoon.”
Treskot thanked the borough crew for its help with getting the bathrooms at the Slatington Trailhead and the bathrooms at the Seventh Street pavilion ready for winter. Treskot invited the Borough Council to the Dec. 5. tree lighting at the Slatington Trailhead. The Venture Group will light a tree for past Councilman Walter Niedermeyer.
