NL blanks Bangor
KINTNERSVILLE — Earlier this season, on Aug. 31, Bangor claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over Northern Lehigh.
On Monday during the Colonial League quarterfinals, the Bulldogs came for their redemption.
Northern Lehigh got it with a decisive 2-0 victory over the Slaters to punch their ticket to Wednesday’s semifinals.
“We thought after the first game, it was a game we could win,” said Northern Lehigh coach Jason Reinhard .
Reinhard offered that he decided to “change some things” and come at the game from a different angle the second time around.
Opening the game, both teams displayed a strong defensive performance and a lot of physicality.
Managing to push through Bangor’s defense, Mikayla Gordon, scored the first goal of the game to give the fifth-seeded Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage.
In a half filled with free and corner kicks, it seemed the tide could change for the teams at any time.
Both Northern Lehigh (13-5-1) and Bangor, the No. 4 seed, displayed tremendous effort and proved to be a difficult fight. Despite the cold weather, the teams went into halftime heated with a 1-0 score.
Proving to be even more physically demanding than the first half, the second half opened with Northern Lehigh’s goalie, Dekota Barthold being injured after a run in with a Bangor (13-5-1) player.
With more passing and physical playing, the teams showed more communication during the second half.
Nearing the end of the game and with 4:01 on the clock, Northern Lehigh scored its second goal. Through a corner kick, Gabriella Hanna crossed to Katelynn Barthold, who landed the Bulldogs’ last goal of the night.
With many close-calls and ‘almosts’ from both teams, this game was bound to be a tough match-up.
“I think they are a solid team for the 3A title,” Reinhard said of Bangor, noting the Slaters are “well-coached” and “very physical.”
UP NEXT ... Northern Lehigh will advance to Wednesday’s semifinals where the Bulldogs will face No. 1 Northwestern at 7 p.m. at Lehighton. The Tigers topped Northern Lehigh 7-0 on Oct. 1.
