Wilson tops Palmerton

Bombers fall in CL f. hockey quarters

Breakaway queen might not be an official position in field hockey.

But it’s a pretty valuable asset for any team to possess.

When Palmerton and Wilson headed into overtime of their Colonial League quarterfinal tied 2-2 on Saturday, the Warriors had somewhat of a secret weapon in speedy forward Carli Apgar.

Less than a minute into overtime, Apgar raced to track down a loose ball near the right sideline. She got to the ball first, put it on her stick and headed toward the goal before slamming home the winner from about 10 yards away with 9:03 left in the first overtime.

Apgar, who had been resting the entire fourth quarter, specializes in scoring goals on breakaways.

“Carli is just my breakaway queen,” said Wilson head coach Emily Lesoine. “She did the same thing against Moravian last week.”

The No. 5 seed Warriors looked like the better team early in the game and in the short overtime, but during most of the second half Palmerton — the No. 4 seed — controlled play to erase a 2-0 deficit.

“It took us a while to get going,” said Palmerton head coach Meg Leadbetter. “Homecoming weekend. We came out here and our priorities were a bit scattered. The moment we called a time out when they scored the second goal, the conversation was simple. Our best 11 are out there. They’re out there for a reason, and if anybody is going to win the game it’s them. And you saw that fight-back.”

Freshman Payton Herncane got the Warriors on the board with 2:55 left in the first quarter with a goal assisted by Maci Kovacs.

Wilson (9-8-1; 8-6-1) remained in control early in the third quarter, earning three corners in the first five minutes before its leading scorer, senior Piper Fretz, got control of the ball in a scrum in front of the cage and hammered it home for a 2-0 lead just over five minutes into the third quarter.

The goal seemed to spark the Bombers (10-6-1 overall; 10-5 Colonial League), as they earned four corners in the final seven minutes of the third quarter and cut into the lead with junior Tessa Sander’s goal, assisted by senior Mackenzie Long off a corner play, to reduce the lead to 2-1 with 6:03 left in the quarter.

Palmerton came out strong in the final period, earning a corner in the second minute and tying the game on senior Makayla Pengelly’s goal with 9:27 left in the game.

Before overtime began, Lesoine told Apgar that a breakaway goal is what her team needed. It didn’t take long before she got her chance.

While Palmerton is eliminated from the league tournament, the Bombers have qualified for the District 11 playoffs and will likely be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in Class A, where they could meet Wilson again.

“You win some and you lose some,” said Leadbetter. “This is OK. Anything can happen in the postseason. This is just going to put more fire under out butts for districts.”
