Schuylkill plans public meetings with DEP

The Schuylkill County Commissioners will meet with representatives of the state Department of Environmental Resources about problems in the western end of the county in mid-December.

At their Wednesday morning meeting, the commissioners announced there will be two meetings.

Commissioner Barron “Boots” Hetherington said DEP wants to hold two public meetings in mid-November.

“We heard back from DEP,” Hetherington said. “They want to hold a meeting with the people from the west end (of the county) somewhere around Nov. 17. They also want to have a meeting about the proposed landfill in Saint Clair around the same time.”

Hetherington said the meetings would be in the evening from 5 to 7 p.m. or 6 to 8 p.m.

In other business, supplies for hurricane victims in North and South Carolina are being collected.

Jeff Dunkle, of Palo Alto, one of the organizers of relief efforts for hurricane victims in the Carolinas, said a bevy of supplies will be trucked to the hurricane victims

“We have a 16-foot refrigerated truck, and three box trucks,” Dunkle told the commissioners. “We have $80,000 in cash besides, including a $20,000 check from an anonymous donor. We will go to Asheville (North Carolina).”
