Helping veterans

The American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, will host the next MilitaryShare event Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The MilitaryShare program at Second Harvest Food Bank is designed “to provide fresh, nutritious foods for families with at least one member who has served or is currently serving in the armed forces.” The program includes surviving spouses.

Prayer Shawl

Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl group will meet on Tuesday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Newcomers are welcome.

Bog day

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center Announces Bog Day, beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 20.

The Tannersville Bog Stewardship Committee along with The Nature Conservancy is sponsoring the annual Bog Day.

Featured will be a guided walk on the boardwalk as well as information on the bog and light refreshments. Participants will the opportunity to meet some of the volunteers who help to maintain and protect this unique natural area.

The walk will be held at 10 a.m. Registration is required. Call 570-629-3061 to register and wear appropriate footwear.

Participants are to meet at the Tannersville Bog parking lot: 552 Cherry Lane Road, East Stroudsburg.

Grief support

The Western Pocono Community Library has partnered with St. Luke’s Hospice to offer free monthly adult grief support. Sign up is not needed and these groups are free and open to everyone.

The first group will meet next Wednesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Additional meetings for 2024 will be held at 1 p.m., Nov. 13 and Nov. 27 (grief at the holidays session), and Dec. 11.

Soup sale

Effort UMC is accepting orders for its current soup sale for stuffed pepper soup and chicken potpie. Orders will be taken through Oct. 16 with a pickup date of Oct. 26.

For costs per quart, contact the church.

Fall sale set

Middlecreek’s annual and rummage sale will be on Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to noon.

There will also be fresh baked goods, quarts of soup for sale, and the kitchen will be selling hot dogs and other treats.

Middlecreek Christian Church is located at 343 Dorshimer Road, Kresgeville.

Shredding event

State Rep. Jack Rader has announced his sixth annual Shredding/Fall Clean up Day for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 19, at Pocono Raceway at 1234 Long Pond Road.

Items residents can bring include sensitive paperwork to be shredded, as well as old tires, expired prescription drugs; cellphones, slightly used books and glasses/sunglasses, which will also be collected.

Free license plate replacement service will be available but registration is required at RepRader.com/events or by calling his office at 570-643-7683 to provide and title numbers.

Special trip set

The Altar Rosary Society of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is sponsoring a bus trip to Sight & Sound Theater in Lancaster to see Daniel on Oct. 31.

Participants will leave from the church at 7:30 a.m. Children 8 to 12 years old get a reduced rate.

The day includes Shady Maple buffet in its cost.

Effort UMC will hold a pork and sauerkraut on Nov. 2. from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Costs are the same as last year and children 3 to 12 get a complimentary meal.

Basket raffle

A basket raffle will be held on Nov. 2 from 1-3 p.m. at the West End Fire Co. in Brodheadsville. Doors open noon and drawing at 3 p.m. Refreshments available. The raffle benefits Buena Vista Cemetery.
