Thorpe standoff ends peacefully

A six-hour standoff in Jim Thorpe borough ended peacefully Tuesday after a resident who threatened police surrendered without further incident.

Jim Thorpe police said they responded around 3:30 p.m. to serve a 302 warrant at 501 Center Ave.

A 302 warrant allows law enforcement to involuntarily transport an individual for an emergency mental health evaluation.

According to a press release, upon making contact with the resident, he became hostile, threatening to shoot the officers.

“Police established a perimeter around the home and called in assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team,” the release states.

Negotiators were able to de-escalate the situation, police said, through dialogue with the resident, who ultimately surrendered peacefully and exited the home without incident.

The resident was taken into custody and transported to a medical facility for evaluation.

Jim Thorpe police said multiple agencies assisted during the standoff including the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office, Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, Nesquehoning Police, Pennsylvania State Police, Carbon County EMA, Lehighton Ambulance, and the Jim Thorpe Fire Department.

“Criminal charges are pending against the resident,” the police statement said.

The department also thanked the community for its patience and cooperation during the incident.
