The Gabriel Chamber Ensemble opens its 35th season with a concert on Sunday at 3 p.m., at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 252 Dock St., Schuylkill Haven.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the concert features music by three Latino composers — Joaquin Turina – La Oración del Torero (a work originally composed for four lutes), Heitor Villa Lobos — String Quartet No. 5 (soulful Brazilian melodies), and the Piano Quintet by Reynaldo Hahn (dramatic, melodic and elegant).
To help mark this milestone of performing in Schuylkill County for 34 successful seasons, the concert will welcome both Sen. David Argall and Schuylkill County Commissioner Gary Hess.
In addition to other planned festivities to celebrate this milestone season GCE has acquired a newly restored Steinway B grand piano for more pristine sound than was found on the much older piano at the church.
This was made possible through the expertise of GCE’s own Dr. Xun Pan, a Steinway artist, and with funds generously bequeathed by the late Dr. Gwen Gentile of Schuylkill Haven and Brooklyn — a beloved and longtime concert patron.
Featured musicians on Sunday are violinists Simon Maurer and Dana Allaband, violist Agnès Maurer, cellist Ai-Lin Hsieh and pianist Xun Pan.
Tickets are available at the door.
The GCE is a nonprofit, professional classical music organization, dedicated to presenting high-caliber performances from the chamber music repertoire.
Concerts are funded by ticket sales, public and private donations, as well as grants from Berks Arts Council and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
