Nesquehoning Borough Council

Nesquehoning Borough Council conducted the following business on Wednesday:

• Adopted the updated fire protection code amendment to the 2024 edition.

• Voted to advertise a handicapped parking ordinance.

• Solicitor Robert Yurchak reported that the borough received payment in full for the demolition of 208 Yard St. The house was demolished following a fire.

• Approved a request from MapleShade Meadows on East Locust Street to close the road in front of the facility for a Halloween event from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 25.

• Hired Ray Tonkinson as a part-time police officer at a rate of $32 per hour. He will help fill in overnight shifts.

• Approved the purchase of AED equipment at a cost of $2,200.

• Nesquehoning Borough Police Chief Michael Weaver explained that the borough police are part of the Carbon County Drug Task Force. That work is done through a partnership with the state Attorney General’s Office and not paid through the borough. He said that because of the task force, it allows Nesquehoning to go to any municipality, working with the task force, to execute warrants and make arrests.

• Mayor Tom Kattner said that a police vehicle that council believed to be junk after several garages said that it would cost too much to fix has been repaired by Rentschler’s in Slatington at a cost of $519. The problem was that the modules inside the vehicle needed to be updated and not replaced, as previously stated.

• Kattner also announced that Trick-or-Treat Night will be from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 31 in the borough. Trunk-or-Treat, which will be hosted at the Nesquehoning Hose Company No. 1, will be from 6-8:30 p.m. on Oct. 19.

• Approved a 50/50 split with the borough water authority to do drainage repairs on East Diaz and Padua in the New Columbus section. It was noted the water authority has already approved the project cost split.

• Awarded the 2024 road project along portions of Center Street and Pine Street to the low bidder, M&J Excavation. The bid was for $123,864.25. The project may or may not be completed this season, depending on weather and the asphalt companies.

• The borough is now accepting applications for crossing guards. Anyone interested should contact the borough office.
