Soup sale ends

Effort UMC soup sale ends today. The soups are lentil with sausage and loaded baked potato. Call the church at 570-629-1890

Pickup is set for Sunday after either service.

Missions dinner

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is hosting its West End Missions dinner at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Gallery photo show

The photography of Heather Sheurs remains on display at the Gallery at Kettle Creek until the show closes at 1 p.m. Saturday.

SFRC pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Precious junk sale

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, is holding a “Precious Junk Sale” from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Funds realized will support the various ministries of the church.

Pizza pickup

People who ordered pizza from McMichaels UMC are reminded that those pizzas must be picked up at the church by noon Saturday.

Fall Festival

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church is having its annual fall festival on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The event will include a trunk or treat event for the children.

Brookmont activity

On Sunday, Brookmont in Effort will host a fall community event for families from noon-4 p.m.

It will include a senior health fair with various activities; fun for the whole family, including foods and snacks; a bounce house and a chance to meet the community’s heroes, including fire, police and ambulance personnel.

Fall Family Day

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church is celebrating a fall family day at Mazezilla at 3 p.m. Sunday. Those registered for the event will be having a family style picnic, and brought dishes shared.

They will also be able to experience a corn maze competition and prizes. Children under 4 are free for the maze for registered families.

Playground plans

Eldred Township has received a grant to create a plan for the playground next to the Community Center (the old Eldred Elementary School) on the design of the park on the approximately 1.5-acre former ballfield between the Municipal Building and Eldred Township Community Center.

An event to include the public in the planning stage of the project is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the center.

All generations are invited to help the planner do the best job to include everyone’s ideas.

Socktober’s here

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is asking people to support local families in need by donating socks during the month of October.

All sizes are needed, from children to adults; take them to the PVEN at 2334 Route 209, Sciota.

Watchers sought

The Dario Belardi Hospitality Scholarship Golf Tournaments is at Hideaway Hills Golf Club on Oct. 2.

Volunteers are needed to help as hole watchers. Shifts are available for the full day (8 a.m.-4 p.m.) or half the day (8 a.m.-noon or 11-4 p.m.).

Anyone who would like to volunteer is asked to call 570-517-5362.

TOPS event

TOPS PA 1113 at Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, at 138 Trach Road, will be having a Paint Party fundraiser at 6 p.m. Oct. 2.

Light refreshments and soft drinks will be provided. All supplies will be available for a night of creative fun. There is a cost. For more information, call Linda at 610-681-6789.

Name change told

Christian Connection, formerly Grief Share, a group designed “specifically for fellowship and sharing,” will be meeting Mondays at noon at Effort UMC.

Meetings will run until 1 p.m. and will be held in the church library.

Bring a lunch and join others in a relaxed atmosphere of sharing God’s love.

OES meeting

The October meeting of the Monroe Chapter 99 OES will be held Wednesday and will honor “those members who have reached their ‘Golden Star’ status, which is membership in the Pennsylvania Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years.”

Chapter 99 has two such members this year.

Shroud of Turin

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church said that its sister church, St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Pocono Pines, will host an exhibit that “contains over 31 popup display banners detailing the history and science of the Shroud of Turin. The centerpiece is a full length canvas replica of the shroud made by the Shroud of Turin Education and Research Association.

In addition, the mobile exhibit contains a large crucified corpus showing the wounds of Christ corresponding to the passion narrative in the Gospel accounts and the wounds shown on the Shroud.”

The admission is free and groups are welcome.

Fall festival

Monroe County Conservation District is hosting a “spook-tacular” Friday Night Fall Festival from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 4. Dive into the spirit of the event with creative crafts, exciting games and nighttime adventures, beginning with a hike to discover the secrets of nocturnal animals and their adaptations.

The night will be capped off with s’mores and stories around the campfire. It’s promised to be a perfect blend of fun and education for the whole family. Participants are encouraged to dress in a fall theme or wear a Halloween costume.

Fall flea market

Oct. 5 is when the Women’s Group at Effort will be holding its semiannual flea market from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Space rental is one rate with your own table; utilizing a church table and space is another. Anyone interested in renting a space/table, contact Joyce Aylsworth at 570-643-3334 as soon as possible. Lunch and bake sale items will be available for purchase.

Pet blessings

Zion Lutheran is holding its Blessing of the Pets at 1 p.m. Oct. 6 in front of the Parish Hall. If it rains it will be inside. All animals are welcome and must be appropriately caged or leashed.

Route 209 Life Chain

Members and friends of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will again form a Life Chain along Route 209, witnessing to the sacredness of human life by holding signs and praying the rosary. The event is 2 p.m. Sunday.
