The late Rev. F. Peter Muhr, who served Lutheran churches in Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua for many years before his passing in June of this year, will be remembered during the 53rd Annual Switchback Scamper that will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday in Summit Hill.
Parishioners of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 319 South Ave., Jim Thorpe, longtime sponsor of the Scamper, have dedicated the annual run/walk in their late pastor’s memory.
He served the church for more than 20 years and previously was the pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Tamaqua.
A native of Bethlehem, the Rev. Muhr graduated from Muhlenberg College, Allentown, in 1964, and from the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, in 1967. In addition to serving the Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua churches, his career included being an assistant pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Shillington, and pastor of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Allentown.
Registration for the Scamper will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. at the Koch/Wildoner Pavilion at Mauch Chunk Lake Park, with transportation to be provided to the race start from lake will be provided.
The longtime event attracts many runners/walkers who return year after year to participate in it. The Scamper is usually held in late October, but due to the Fall Foliage Festival traffic, the organizers felt for safety of the participants an earlier date would be a better option.
The event organizers invite participants, church members and the general public to join them in an afternoon of remembrance of Rev. Muhr and fellowship. Refreshments will be served, including soup, hot chocolate, coffee, water and assorted baked goods.
Participants can also register online at http://runsignup.com/Race/PA/JimThorpe/SwitchbackScamper. Additional information is available on the church’s website at stjohnsinjimthorpe.org.
