State to consider Bowmanstown hall
Bowmanstown should soon know whether the borough hall will be registered as a historic building.
It was announced at last week’s borough council workshop that the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Board will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 in Harrisburg.
At that time, the organization will review and possibly nominate the former Bowmanstown School in the National Register of Historic Places.
Borough hall is among 11 properties listed for consideration by the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Board for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
The next closest property listed for consideration in terms of proximity is the Valley of Allentown Scottish Rite Cathedral in Allentown.
Bowmanstown Borough Council announced in June that the second draft application had been submitted.
In June 2023, council said help was needed for the second draft of submittal for the National Register of Historic Places.
Council at that time suggested the names of several people believed to have a heightened knowledge of the building who could be of assistance.
In September 2021, council applied for a grant to have its borough building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Councilwoman Kara Scott previously said the listing on the national registry would allow the borough more access to grant money.
The borough hall building is a converted school building that was built in 1903.
Councilman Rob Moyer said at that time the borough hall building is lacking because it’s an older building.
Scott said she was concerned about the playgrounds and basketball courts, which she said get a lot of use.
“The building is almost iconic,” she said.
