Fugitive arrested in Tamaqua

An intoxicated man found sleeping next to railroad tracks in Tamaqua Monday afternoon was wanted on an arrest warrant from Texas, Tamaqua police said.

According to police, a borough employee saw the man, later identified as Jose Victorino Hernandez, 32, of Irving, Texas, sleeping on the ground next to the tracks near the 400 block of East Broad Street at 3:44 p.m.

An officer approached Hernandez, and when he awoke, they could smell a strong odor of alcohol. Police said his eyes were bloodshot and he was having trouble walking.

Police initially had difficulty learning his name due to his intoxicated state and a language barrier.

He was transported to the police station and evaluated by emergency responders who found that he was “drunk” but not injured, police said.

When police learned Hernandez’s name, they found that he had a felony warrant in Texas for driving while intoxicated with a child under the age of 15. Tamaqua police notified the Dallas County Sheriff.

Hernandez was arraigned before Orwigsburg Magisterial District Judge Andrew J. Serina and committed to the Schuylkill County Prison on $125,000 cash bail in lieu of extradition to Texas.
