Church, group to present ‘Slatington’s Melting Pot’
It’s the latest sojourn in a series to highlight cemeteries in the Northern Lehigh area.
Assumption BVM Church and the Slatington History Preservation Committee will sponsor a program entitled “Assumption BVM Catholic Cemetery — Slatington’s Melting Pot.”
It will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Vigilant Fire Company, 110 S. Walnut St. The event is free and open to the public, and parking is available in the Vigilant Fire Company parking lot.
The event will mark the Sixth Speaker Series on important people, places and events in Northern Lehigh’s history, according to Robert Stettner, treasurer of the committee.
Stettner said the presentation is another in a series of “Cemetery Walks” held by the committee highlighting the cemeteries in the Northern Lehigh area.
He added that the presentation will highlight the history of the Assumption BVM Catholic Church/Cemetery and the families and individuals who were representative of Slatington’s Melting Pot, a second wave of immigration following the Welsh, comprised mostly of Austrian, German, Hungarian, Italian and Slovak nationalities, and learn how they assimilated, prospered and contributed to Slatington’s history.
“This is a little different; most of the other cemetery presentations dealt with the Welsh that came over with the slate industry, where this is a Catholic cemetery,” Stettner said. “It’s going to deal with a bunch of different ethnicities, so we’re going to kind of show how these families came here and they got to know each other and hung out together in church and the town and assimilated into the community and the United States. “It should be interesting to see a different ethnic makeup of this community; there’s more components to the mix of Slatington that people may not realize.”
